Deployment Done (again) and a test print done

12 December 2025

Don’t worry, I have not posted on time I’m simply so late it appears I’m early.

Late again

New Deployment system done

I built my site while overseas and took a lot of shortcuts while building the scripts to automate deployment, I took shortcuts. I installed node and ruby on the windows laptop and logged in using primary accounts. For deployment jobs like this, I should be using API Keys, and setting up everything in docker so I can deploy regardless of where I run my scripts.

If you want to check out the deployment system here is a link. Feel free to send a message on github if you need a hand.

Hard Word

So, I migrated my scripts from .bat scripts to .sh scripts, shoved them in custom docker images and … it’s working? That’s not normal.

WHy is it working

The new system is super simple to run. All you need to do is build the docker image with the included script, put your files in the public folder, and run “docker compose up”.

The original deployment system requires a bunch of manual setup before you can run it. But, the new system does most of the setup for you. All you need to do is track down API keys and put them in.

The only issue I had was a Key permission configuration problem. Now it should run on any linux computer.

Even if the computer is on fire

I’ve always supported automation. It allows us to save time to spend on more important things. I’ll be saving 5 minutes a week so I can spend 4 hours on wondering why my deployments failed.

Migration to VSCodium

So I’ve been using Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code (VS Code) as my IDE of choice for a while. It’s light, versatile and fairly unintrusive. However, with Microsoft’s push to include AI in everything (i.e. Co-pilot) I’ve been trying to move away from it. VSCodium is the obvious (and seemingly only) choice. If I want enshitified applications, it’ll on my terms. (Goes to install Bonzi Buddy).

Microsoft making things worse

So, I switched to VSCodium. It’s basically VS Code but without Microsoft’s divine touch. And they spoke words of unending beauty “We hate our users and wish naught but suffering on them”.

3D printed Dice Box

So, I finally got around to printing that dice box I designed a while back (See here). And, it turned out pretty well. Very thin but the inner dimensions are perfect, but the outside needs work.

(Image - you’r beutiful on the inside not the outside)

Dice box 1

Dice box 2

I mean, it’s a great dice box, walls so thin it’ll disintegrate upon use so I’ll need to print more (maybe sell them too). Plus, I can justify buying a Prusa Core One as my current printer will be printing replacement dice boxes nonstop.

Final points

Anyway, I really need to get cracking on writing that DND heist adventure.

I was discussing with a friend all the annoying modern trends. For example, I hate always on electronics which don’t really need it So, my xbox controller constantly draining power even when “off” destroys the battery and the controller. Their example was touch screen only cars. Fuck both these trends.

I have an old multi-meter same battery for 15 years with no issue. My modern calipers, battery completely drained after 3 weeks. I’m going to have to solder an external battery switch to solve it.

What about you? What modern product trends do you hate?
